12th Street Riot
The 12th street riot took place on the corner of 12th and Clairmount streets on the West side. This riot began on July 23,1967 and lasted until July 27 the same year. Overall this riot lasted four days until George Romney sent MI National Guard and President Johnson sent in army troops to put a stop to it. The riot was started when Walter Scott III threw a bottle at a police officer and incited the crowd. Hardy's drug store was the first place t be robbed the Monday after the riot was started. The government heard of this outbreak of violence and sent in troops. The riot made Detroit look like one of the most segregated areas in the nation by 2000.
